Marseille midfielder and France international Mattéo Guendouzi (24) is not certain to leave Les Phocéens next summer, according to a report from L’Equipe. The former Arsenal player was reportedly close to a Premier League return during last winter’s transfer window amid interest from West Ham United and Aston Villa. The Birmingham-based outfit is spearheaded by Unai Emery, Guendouzi’s former coach at Arsenal.
The Poissy-born midfielder is reportedly frustrated by his playing time this season. Although, he played 43 games in all competitions with Marseille, he only started 25 league games. Guendouzi is said to have shown relief when Croatian manager Igor Tudor announced his resignation. The relationship was reportedly tense between the former Arsenal man and Tudor. Although, the latter handed Guendouzi the skipper’s armband for his final game in the Marseille’s dugout last Saturday at Ajaccio (0-1).
Marseille’s loss in Corsica did not go well with Guendouzi, who was very critical towards his teammates in the aftermath. L’Equipe believes that Guendouzi is far from being the most popular player in the Marseille dressing room. The former Lorient player is tied to OM until 2025. The Marseille board is keen to sell him, but it is unclear yet if Guendouzi really wish to move on.
