Victor Osimhen – from Playing Football on Lagos’ Streets to Being Wanted by Top European Clubs

1xBet tells Victor Osimhen’s inspiring story.

Victor James Osimhen, the Nigerian star player that is followed and badly wanted by some of the biggest names in football, has a fantastic story. Born on the 29th of December 1998 in Lagos, he is the sixth child of a low-income family that decided to move to Lagos shortly before his birth.

Who would’ve guessed that Napoli’s player, closely followed by Chelsea, spent part of his childhood facing the scorching Lagos sun among cars where his mother sold sachet water to boost the family income? As soon as he could sell the water by himself, Victor started doing so to raise funds for his family and get an education.

The Olusosun Primary School where Osimhen started studying was his first contact with football. Alongside other pupils and children from the community, Victor spent all his free time playing football. His elder brother was already a football star in the local community, and that’s where the inspiration to learn how to play better came. Also, thanks to Andrew, Victor became a fan of Chelsea FC and chose Didier Drogba as his idol.

Seeing that his younger brother has exceptional football talent, Andrew decided to abandon his education to help earn money so Victor could pursue his dream of becoming a professional player. The family’s efforts paid off when Victor was invited to the Ultima Strikers Academy in Lagos. After a first successful trial and a couple of amazing matches, Victor was spotted by coach Amuneke to play in Nigeria’s U-17 team.

His fantastic performances for Nigeria’s U17 team brought the attention of VfL Wolfsburg that proposed a three-and-a-half-year deal in 2017. He played for Wolfsburg for one year, and after summer trials for Zulte and Club Brugge, he was set for a move to Belgium. However, he contracted malaria, and that gravely affected his physical condition. In the end, he was sent on a loan to Charleroi, where he scored 20 goals in 36 appearances!

After his success in the Belgium league, the move to Ligue 1 came as a natural next step. Lille bought Victor in 2019 and in the year spent in France he scored 18 goals in 38 appearances. However, his skills and awareness in front of goal caught the eyes of Serie A scouts, and since 2020 he has played at Napoli. The most expensive transfer in Napoli’s history, Victor, proved to be an excellent investment as he already scored more than 15 goals for the team.

Dubbed by many football experts as the most-wanted African football player at the moment, Victor continues to showcase exceptional football at Napoli and the Nigerian National Team. So it’s no wonder that Chelsea and other top European clubs have shown interest in acquiring the 22-year-old striker’s services.

Where he’ll play next is anyone’s guess but the future certainly looks bright for Victor Osimhen. And just like he had Didier Drogba as an idol when he was growing up, Victor is already an idol for so many youngsters playing football around the globe.
