The Recopa Sudamericana was launched in 1989 as CONMEBOL wanted to replace it with the Supercopa Sudamericana which was a plan to create a super cup match that would be played between the champions of the continent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Boca Juniors became a force to be reckoned with in the 90s when they won four league titles which they won in 1990, 2005, 2006, and 2008.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

History will always remember that 1990 season where they beat Nacional 1-0 thanks to a goal from Diego Latorre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It used to be a two-legged final – one would be played in the home stadium of the first team and the other in the home stadium of the second team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expansion and the Modern Era (2003-present)<\/b><\/h3>\n

Since 2003, it has always been maintained that the Recopa would be a match between the champions of Copa Libertadores and the champions of the Copa Sudamericana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, they\u2019ve moved it from being two-legged competition to just a single match but it will be played at a neutral venue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

River Plate is considered the new force in recent times as they have won three consecutive championships in 2015, 2016, and 2019. Their win in 2015 was very remarkable. It took a 79th minute goal from Carlos S\u00e1nchez to get them the win over San Lorenzo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Flamengo won the title in 2020 and Palmeiras in 2022 which marked the rise of Brazilian teams and there was a shock from Ecuador as Independiente del Valle won the title in 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 2024 season, Fluminense won with a 90+2 minute winner from John Kennedy to beat LDU Quito at the Maracan\u00e3 Stadium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2025 season is going to be held in Miami and it is geared at attracting viewership from fans around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tournament format and highlights<\/b><\/h2>\n

Tournament structure and participation rules<\/b><\/h3>\n

The Recopa Sudamericana is a single match of 90 minutes. There could be extra time of 30 minutes and penalty shootouts if the game remains a tie after 90 minutes to decide who wins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Held in February every year, it is a match between the champions of the Copa Libertadores and the winners of the Copa Sudamericana. If it is the same team that won both tournaments, then the opponent would be the runners-up of the Copa Sudamericana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A team is allowed to register a maximum of 30 players and that includes 5 domestic players who were trained in the country and are between the ages of 15 and 21.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The games now use VAR technology and they bring the referee from a neutral country. Being the winner means that you go home with a $2 million prize and the runners up get $1 million and a silver trophy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On average, every match in the competition gets 2.9 goals and 30% of the games have been decided by extra time and penalties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A classic match and a successful team.<\/b><\/h3>\n

Boca Juniors is the most successful team in the history of the Recopa as they have won 4 championships. They had a remarkable victory in the 2005 season where they beat Once Caldas 5-3 across both legs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

River Plate is next. They too have three titles which they won in 2015, 2016, and 2019. The match in 2019 was one of monumental proportions. River Plate had to come back from losing 0-1 in the first leg to winning 3-0 in the second leg thanks to a brace from Ignacio Fern\u00e1ndez and a goal from Pity Mart\u00ednez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
