I’ve been an avid football fan for about 17 years now. I started watching around age 12, and back then, I had very little knowledge about the sport; I didn’t even know what the offside rule was. I had no understanding of football strategies at the time either.<\/p>\n

Here’s some advice. For the most part, people that make bets are not taking any time to do their research. They are betting based off their feelings or hot takes they come across on Twitter during their lunch break.<\/p>\n

I kept a log of all the predictions I made last season and entered them all onto a spreadsheet. Over a period of four months, I was able to improve my accuracy from 41% to about 68%. This was all due to the simple research that I took the time to do.<\/p>\n

You don’t have to be some sophisticated statistician with a background in advanced math to make good predictions. You just have to notice the things that casual fans don’t.<\/p>\n

What Actually Matters Before You Bet<\/span><\/h2>\n

I used to only care about the points scored, and that resulted in me losing quite a few times. I would only look at scores from the current season to find point averages and that also wasn’t helpful. I now focus on the point averages of the past few matchups between the two squads. I now also look at injury reports a few days before the match. I also consider a team’s overall home performance vs. their performance on the road, and I also look at the match-day conditions, especially if the match will be held outdoors.<\/p>\n

It may sound like common sense, but if a Premier League team trains in a climate-controlled facility, they will likely play at least 23% worse if the match is held outdoors and it is raining.<\/p>\n

New online betting<\/span><\/a> platforms make it so that you are able to view data for free that in the past, you would have to pay a lot of money to be able to see. Now, because of legal betting, you can see where the money is moving and what the smart money is. This is so different from gambling because you can gain a big advantage.<\/p>\n

My Biggest Mistake (And How You Can Avoid It)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Last March, I placed a $340 bet I thought was a lock. It was Liverpool at Anfield against a lower-tier team. Liverpool was on a home winning streak of 8 games. I failed to see that Liverpool\u2019s leading scorer was suffering from a hamstring injury.<\/p>\n

He played 31 minutes before coming off the field limping. Liverpool ended up drawing that game 1-1. I ended up with a very expensive lesson on the importance of injury reports over betting form.<\/p>\n

Now, I scroll over 15 minutes team news before betting. I find myself much less frustrated because I am less likely to suffer unexpected betting losses.<\/p>\n

Reading Between the Lines<\/span><\/h2>\n

The main difference between good predictors and lucky predictors, is the good predictors actually take the time to watch the games (or at least the highlights). I have a buddy who will only check the final scores. He fails to see that a score of 2-0 could have easily been a dominate performance by the losing team, and that team could have hit the post three times with a 62% possession.<\/p>\n

Stats are unreliable. The rest of the picture is usually furnished by what you see.<\/p>\n

I make notes on my observations after games. Things like \u201cTeam X looks exhausted after 70 mins\u201d or \u201ctheir defensive right side keeps leaving gaps\u201d that are evidence of tendencies. You\u2019d be surprised how often those details become relevant weeks later.<\/p>\n

When the Odds Don’t Make Sense<\/span><\/h2>\n

Every now and then a bookie will slip up. I won’t claim that it’s common, but if you keep a lookout they occasionally get it wrong. I caught one when an October Serie A match had a team at +280 as the underdog, however after watching the team play their last three matches, you could tell that they had fixed some of their tactical issues.<\/p>\n

The final score was 3-1.<\/p>\n

Chances like this don’t happen too often, maybe two to three times a month if you’re lucky. Once you spot an opportunity like this, it is like finding cash you had lost.<\/p>\n

The biggest factor here is that you need to believe in your evaluation more than the information everyone else is regurgitating. Most people who gamble are pretty lazy when you really look at it. They are widely focused on the stories but not the score and the actual results.
